Project Brief

Manchester's Ghost Tracks transforms the historic Castlefield Basin into an intimate, one-person-at-a-time theatrical experience. Participants download an audio track and, guided by a spectral narrator, walk a curated route past crumbling warehouses, under Victorian viaducts, and along deserted towpaths. At specific GPS-triggered points, the voices of long-dead canal workers, engineers, and factory children emerge from the stones, sharing fragments of memory, protest, and lost dreams. The project merges hyper-local oral history with speculative fiction, asking: what echoes remain in brick and water? This is theatre stripped to its essence—no stage, no seats, just a listener moving through living history. The experience is unique each time, shaped by weather, time of day, and the participant's own pace. We'll record original monologues in authentic Mancunian dialects, using binaural audio techniques to create haunting 3D soundscapes. The final piece will exist as both a public artwork (available for free download) and a limited live performance series where actors will shadow participants, appearing briefly as ghostly figures before vanishing into the urban landscape.
