Project Brief

This project will create a series of site-responsive installations at three key Manchester locations where industrial heritage meets modern urban life. Using found industrial objects from the city's canals and warehouses, we'll embed motion sensors, LED lighting, and contact microphones to create interactive sculptures that respond to human presence and environmental conditions. Each piece will 'awaken' when approached, emitting light patterns and processed field recordings from Manchester's industrial past, creating a dialogue between historical memory and present-day interaction. The installation will employ current creative trends in experiential art, sonic archaeology, and sustainable practice by repurposing discarded materials. What makes this project unique is its hyper-local specificity—each sculpture's soundscape will be created from audio recordings taken at its exact location, processed to reveal hidden frequencies and rhythms. The project aims to make Manchester's industrial history physically tangible and emotionally resonant for contemporary audiences, transforming overlooked spaces into temporary portals to the past.
