Project Brief

This project aims to revive the vibrant street performance culture of Malta by transforming the narrow, historic alleyways of Valletta into an immersive theatrical experience. Over 2-4 weeks, a small team of performers, event planners, and content creators will design and execute a series of pop-up performances that blend traditional Maltese storytelling, contemporary dance, and audience participation. The concept draws inspiration from the city’s rich history of festivals and its unique architectural backdrop. Each performance will be site-specific, using the alley’s natural acoustics and visual elements—like limestone walls and wrought-iron balconies—as part of the stage. The goal is to create a portable, low-tech show that can be repeated in different locations, capturing the spontaneous energy of a busker but with the polish of a curated theatre piece. What makes this project unique is its fusion of heritage and modernity. By involving local musicians, dancers, and even a startup founder to manage logistics, the team will produce a series of shareable, Instagram-worthy moments that celebrate Malta’s cultural identity while engaging both locals and tourists. The final output will be a short documentary and a set of performance highlights for social media, positioning the project as a case study in urban placemaking.
