Project Brief

This project transforms a rainy Manchester afternoon into a stage. We'll create a temporary, outdoor art installation in Stevenson Square that reacts to the city's famous drizzle. The performance uses water-soluble chalk paints on the pavement, with an actor wearing a white canvas coat as a living canvas. As rain falls, the art blurs, shifts, and washes away, creating a poetic metaphor for impermanence. The illustrator will sketch live on the pavement and on the actor's coat, while the art director designs the overall visual narrative and manages the weather-conscious setup. The audience becomes part of the experience as they watch the artwork dissolve in real time. Manchester's industrial heritage and its notoriously wet climate are the true collaborators here. The piece celebrates the city's grit and resilience, turning a common weather complaint into a creative asset. The performance is set for a single afternoon, but the event is documented through time-lapse video and photography, capturing the full cycle from creation to disappearance. This project is a bold, low-budget, high-impact statement that leverages current trends in ephemeral art, eco-friendly materials, and live performance.
