Project Brief

Bushwick Botanicals is a site-specific augmented reality art walk that transforms five existing murals in Bushwick into interactive gateways to hidden botanical and cultural histories. Using a custom AR app, viewers point their phones at the murals to see animated plants, hear oral histories from longtime residents, and uncover layers of meaning about gentrification, resilience, and community roots. The project merges street art, digital storytelling, and augmented reality to create a participatory experience that honors the neighborhood's past while embracing its creative future. The creative vision is to weave together the physical and digital realms, making the streets of Bushwick a living gallery. Each mural will be chosen for its location and visual style, then augmented with 3D animations, soundscapes, and interactive elements that respond to the viewer's movement. The project is unique because it is hyper-local, collaborative with local artists and historians, and leaves a lasting digital layer that can be experienced by anyone with a smartphone. It leverages current trends in AR art (like Snap's Landmarker and Niantic's Lightship) and the growing interest in immersive, location-based storytelling. Over four weeks, a team of five will research, design, and build the AR experiences, culminating in a launch event and a publicly available app. The deliverables include the AR app, a series of five augmented murals, a short documentary about the process, and a printed map/zine. This project is portfolio-worthy for all involved, showcasing technical skill, cultural sensitivity, and creative innovation.
