Project Brief

Subway Sonatas is a series of five short operatic scenes (5-7 minutes each) performed guerrilla-style in different NYC subway stations. Each scene is inspired by the unique acoustic and visual environment of its station—from the majestic arches of Grand Central to the gritty tunnels of the L train. The project blends classical vocal techniques with contemporary electronic beats and spoken word, creating a genre-defying experience that surprises and moves commuters. The performances will be filmed and edited into a cohesive digital series, capturing both the staged moments and genuine audience reactions. This project is unique because it takes opera out of the concert hall and into the daily lives of New Yorkers. It challenges the elitist perception of opera, making it accessible and immediate. By leveraging the subway's natural reverb and the city's vibrant street culture, we create a hybrid art form that is both intimate and public. The guerrilla nature of the performances adds an element of spontaneity and authenticity, while the filmed series ensures the work reaches a wider audience beyond those who happen to pass by. We aim to collaborate with local musicians and performers who are passionate about pushing boundaries. The project is designed to be completed in four weeks, from initial concept to final edit, making it a fast-paced, exciting endeavor. The final deliverables will include a series of high-quality videos and a behind-the-scenes documentary, perfect for portfolio and festival submissions.
