Project Brief

This project transforms the familiar streets and alleyways of Manchester's Northern Quarter into a living stage for a series of five site-specific, 20-minute performances. Each 'nocturne' will be performed for a small, roving audience of 15-20 people, guiding them through a curated route that pauses at significant but overlooked locations—a tucked-away courtyard, a historic doorway, a piece of street art. The narrative weaves together fragments of Manchester's industrial past, its musical heritage, and contemporary voices, creating a poetic and physical dialogue with the architecture and atmosphere of the area. The concept leverages the growing trend of 'micro-theatre' and immersive, location-based storytelling, offering an accessible yet profound cultural experience. What makes it unique is its hyper-local focus and its blend of the analogue (live performance) with the digital (subtle, location-triggered soundscapes and projected text or imagery on building surfaces). It's designed to make both performers and audience see the city anew, creating a portfolio piece that demonstrates innovative, community-engaged performance practice.
