This project reimagines a section of the Rochdale Canal or the Bridgewater Canal as a living audio canvas. We'll install discreet, weatherproof speakers along a 500-metre stretch, triggered by motion sensors and the time of day. The soundscape layers recordings of Manchester's industrial machinery, spoken word from local poets and residents, and live improvisations from a theatre actor. As people walk the towpath, they trigger different sonic chapters – from the clatter of a 19th-century loom to a whispered monologue about modern life in the Northern Quarter. The piece builds towards a culminating live event: a dusk performance where the actor, positioned on a narrowboat, performs a new text live, synced with the installation's audio. This fuses the city's history, its diverse voices, and its present creative energy into a transient, site-specific experience that lives only in the memory of its audience.
