Manchester's Northern Quarter is a living canvas of brickwork, street art, and architectural layers that hold generations of stories. This project will create a series of large-scale illustrated artworks that blend digital illustration with physical textures from specific Manchester locations—capturing the patina of Stevenson Square walls, the ghost signs of Thomas Street, and the industrial textures of the old warehouses. Each piece will incorporate augmented reality elements that reveal hidden narratives when viewed through a smartphone, creating a dialogue between Manchester's past and present. What makes this project unique is its hybrid approach: we'll create physical art installations at 3-4 key Northern Quarter locations while developing a digital companion experience. The illustrations will incorporate actual rubbings and scans of Manchester's architectural surfaces, making each piece geographically specific and impossible to replicate elsewhere. This project taps into the growing trend of location-based storytelling and AR-enhanced art, while celebrating Manchester's distinctive creative identity.
