Luminaria is a site-specific light art trail that reimagines Malta's UNESCO-listed megalithic temples (Ġgantija, Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra) through contemporary projection mapping, interactive light installations, and ambient soundscapes. Over three weeks, a small team of artists and technologists will create a series of immersive installations that highlight the astronomical alignments and mysterious history of these 5,000-year-old structures, inviting local and international visitors to experience them after dark in a completely new way. The project responds to the global trend of 'art after dark' and immersive heritage experiences, while being deeply rooted in Malta's unique cultural landscape. Unlike traditional light shows, Luminaria will be low-impact, using non-invasive projection and battery-powered lights to preserve the archaeological sites. Each installation will be accompanied by a short artist statement and a digital map for self-guided tours. The creative vision is to create a dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary, using light as a medium to reveal hidden patterns and stories. The trail will culminate in a one-night-only public event with live performances and a community gathering, followed by a digital documentation that extends the project's life online. This project is not only portfolio-worthy but also fosters a deeper connection between locals and their heritage.
