Thames to Wey: A Living Portrait is a visual arts project that explores the interconnected lives of people living along two of the region's most iconic rivers: the Thames in London and the Wey in Surrey. Through a series of intimate, large-format photographic portraits taken at key locations—from the bustling South Bank to the serene Wey Navigation—the project will create a moving portrait of contemporary life in these areas. The portraits will be accompanied by short audio interviews, creating a multi-sensory experience. The creative vision is to highlight the contrasts and connections between urban and rural life, celebrating the diversity of the communities that call these riverbanks home. The project will culminate in a mixed-media installation combining the photographs with ambient river sounds, displayed in a pop-up gallery in both London and Surrey. This dual-location exhibition will draw audiences from both areas, fostering a sense of shared identity and place. What makes this project unique is its hyper-local focus combined with a universal theme of human connection to nature and heritage. It leverages the current trend for immersive, socially-engaged art and offers a fresh perspective on familiar landscapes. The project is designed to be completed by a small team of 4-5 creatives over 3 weeks, making it both ambitious and achievable.
