Launch at end of week 3
This project is an immersive street opera that transforms the vibrant streets of Manchester's Northern Quarter into a living stage. Over three weeks, a small ensemble of performers will create a series of pop-up performances that blend opera, physical theatre, and spoken word, inspired by the area's rich history of music, art, and rebellion. Each performance will be site-specific, taking place in locations like Afflecks Palace, Oldham Street, and Stevenson Square, engaging passersby and telling the stories of the people who make the Northern Quarter unique. The creative vision is to celebrate Manchester's DIY spirit and its legacy as a hub for counterculture, using the raw energy of the streets as a backdrop. The piece will incorporate contemporary issues such as gentrification, community, and resilience, making it both timely and timeless. What makes this unique is its guerrilla-style approach: no stage, no tickets, just spontaneous moments of beauty in the everyday. The final deliverable will be a short film documenting the performances, capturing the essence of the project for portfolio and promotional use.
