Whispers of the Severn is an original site-specific folk opera that intertwines Bewdley's rich history with the timeless flow of the River Severn. Drawing from local myths, the town's historic past, and the evocative power of folk music, this production will transform the Museum Gardens and the banks of the Severn into a living stage. The piece will feature original compositions for voice, fiddle, and accordion, combined with contemporary dance and spoken word, creating a tapestry of sound and movement that resonates with both locals and visitors. The creative team will collaborate with community members to gather stories and songs, ensuring authenticity and fostering a sense of ownership. The performance will be staged at dusk, with the river as a backdrop, utilizing natural light and simple lanterns to create an atmospheric, intimate experience. This project is unique in its blend of heritage and innovation, offering a fresh take on traditional folk art while embracing immersive and site-specific trends in contemporary performance. By the end of the project, the team will have created a 30-minute promenade performance that can be adapted for future festivals and events, showcasing Bewdley's cultural identity and the power of collective storytelling.
