Project Brief

Urban Echoes is a groundbreaking dual-city performance project that creates a real-time, site-specific dialogue between London and Hull. The concept centers on two small troupes of performers—one in each city—executing a choreographed, responsive piece simultaneously. Using live-streaming technology projected onto architectural surfaces (like the brickwork of London's Tobacco Dock or Hull's historic Fruit Market), the performers in each location will react to and mirror the movements of the other, creating a visual and narrative conversation across distance. The narrative thread explores themes of industrial legacy, migration, and urban renewal, drawing direct parallels between Hull's post-industrial transformation and London's ever-evolving districts like Hackney Wick. What makes this project unique is its hybrid nature: it's a live, in-person performance for local audiences in each city, while also being a unified digital artwork. The final piece will be a multi-screen film edit that intercuts the two performances, highlighting the synchronicity and dissonance. It leverages the trend of 'phygital' (physical+digital) experiences and location-responsive art, creating a portfolio piece that showcases innovative use of technology, narrative, and cross-geography collaboration. The project is designed to be achievable with a small, multi-skilled team, using accessible streaming tech and public or low-cost performance spaces.
