Launch at end of week 4
This project is an immersive documentary performance that captures the essence of Manchester through the voices of its residents. We will interview a cross-section of Mancunians—from market traders in the Northern Quarter to students in Fallowfield, from football fans to artists—and weave their stories into a cohesive narrative. The performance will combine spoken word, original music composed in response to the interviews, and dynamic projected visuals that map Manchester's landscape. The piece will be staged in a non-traditional venue, such as a warehouse in Ancoats or a community hall in Moss Side, creating an intimate and immersive experience. The creative vision is to celebrate Manchester's resilience, diversity, and cultural heritage while addressing contemporary issues like gentrification and social change. The performance will be devised collaboratively, with the director leading the creative team in transforming raw interviews into a powerful theatrical experience. The use of multimedia will enhance the storytelling, with projections of Manchester's streets, landmarks, and archival footage. The project is unique in its hyper-local focus and its fusion of documentary theatre with live music and visual art, making it a standout portfolio piece for all involved. We will engage with local communities to ensure authenticity and will partner with grassroots organisations for research and outreach. The final performance will be filmed and edited into a short documentary, extending its reach beyond the live audience. This project is timely, as it aligns with current trends in immersive and socially-engaged performance, and it leverages Manchester's rich cultural tapestry to create something truly original.
