Project Brief

Manchester Mosaic is a site-specific visual arts project that captures the essence of the Northern Quarter through a fusion of photography, collage, and community engagement. Over four weeks, a team of artists will create a series of large-scale collages that reimagine iconic locations like Afflecks, Piccadilly Records, and the Northern Quarter's street art scene. The project will involve photographing local residents, workers, and visitors, then layering these images with textures, patterns, and historical references to create vibrant, multi-layered artworks that tell the story of this unique neighbourhood. The final pieces will be exhibited in a pop-up gallery in a vacant shop unit on Oldham Street, with a launch event that invites the community to participate in a live collage workshop. The project aims to celebrate the Northern Quarter's independent spirit while addressing themes of gentrification and cultural identity. By combining traditional collage techniques with digital photography and augmented reality elements, Manchester Mosaic offers a fresh, interactive take on visual storytelling. What makes this project unique is its hyper-local focus and participatory approach. The team will collaborate with local businesses, artists, and historians to ensure authenticity, and the final exhibition will include a digital archive accessible via QR codes, allowing viewers to explore the stories behind each piece. This project is not just an exhibition; it's a living archive of Manchester's creative pulse.
