Project Brief

This project transforms Manchester's iconic industrial architecture into a living canvas using augmented reality. By targeting specific landmarks like the Castlefield Viaducts, the former Ancoats mills, or the arches of Deansgate, we will create site-specific digital artworks that are viewable through a simple web app on any smartphone. The concept is to 'reveal' the hidden layers of Manchester's history—ghostly steam engines moving along viaducts, spectral mill workers in windows, or abstract data visualizations of the city's textile production—superimposed onto the present-day structures. What makes this project unique is its democratic accessibility and hyper-local specificity. Unlike traditional murals, this AR installation requires no physical alteration to the sites, making it ideal for heritage locations. It leverages the growing trend of digital placemaking and 'phygital' art, creating a portfolio piece that is both technically innovative and deeply rooted in Manchester's identity. The final experience will be a curated walking trail, encouraging exploration and offering a new, immersive way to engage with the city's industrial soul.
