Project Brief

This project transforms Malta's capital city into a living musical instrument. We will spend two weeks capturing the distinct soundscape of Valletta – the rhythmic clatter of horse-drawn karrozzin, the echoing footsteps in St. John's Co-Cathedral, the melodic calls of street vendors in the market, the crashing waves against the Grand Harbour fortifications – and then layer these recordings into an original ambient composition. The result is a unique sonic postcard that celebrates the city's 500-year history through its most intimate moments. What makes this project unique is its blend of urban exploration and musical composition. The team will not only record but also interact with the environment, using contact microphones on ancient limestone walls, hydrophones in the harbour water, and electromagnetic pickups to capture the city's hidden frequencies. This raw material will be then arranged using modern production techniques (granular synthesis, spectral processing) to create a piece that feels both ancient and futuristic, a true reflection of Malta's identity as a crossroads of civilizations. The final deliverable will be a 10-minute audio-visual experience: a film featuring the recorded visuals synced to the evolving soundscape, accompanied by a spatial audio mix. This project is perfect for showcasing innovative sound design, cultural storytelling, and technical proficiency in field recording and music production.
