Project Brief

This project draws inspiration from the vibrant, eclectic energy of Manchester's Northern Quarter. We will create a set of three to four original monologues, each written for and performed in a unique location within the district—a vintage record shop, a tucked-away courtyard, a bustling coffee house. The pieces will weave together themes of urban life, memory, and the changing face of a city that balances its industrial past with a fiercely independent creative spirit. The director will lead the vision, collaborating closely with local writers or using found text to craft pieces that feel authentic to each space. Performances will be filmed in a single, uninterrupted take per location, capturing the raw acoustics and ambient character of the surroundings. The final output will be a short, cinematic anthology film that can be submitted to theatre and film festivals, showcasing the unique fusion of performance and place. What makes this project unique is its hyper-local specificity. It doesn't just use Manchester as a backdrop; the locations are co-stars. The project is designed to be achieved by a small, agile team—a director, a cinematographer/editor, a sound recordist, and a few versatile performers—making it a perfect portfolio piece that demonstrates directorial range, location scouting skills, and the ability to produce compelling narrative content with limited resources.
