Project Brief

This project will create a short, immersive performance piece that brings to life the hidden stories and vibrant energy of Manchester's Northern Quarter. Drawing on the area's history as a hub for creatives, from the legendary Hacienda era to its current indie scene, the performance will use physical theatre and live illustration to transform a specific location into a living storyboard. The piece will be designed for a small audience of 10-15 people, leading them on a 20-minute journey through a single, evocative space—such as the alleyways behind Stevenson Square or the iconic Afflecks Palace. The unique element of this project is the fusion of live performance with on-the-spot illustration. An artist will capture key moments and characters of the performance in real-time, creating a series of drawn 'memory frames' that will be projected or displayed as the performance unfolds. This creates a multi-layered experience where the audience witnesses both the live event and its artistic interpretation being born simultaneously. The final deliverable will be a documented film of the performance, intercut with the illustrations and interviews with the team, plus the original illustration series. We will leverage the current trend for hyper-local, experiential art that celebrates overlooked urban spaces. Manchester's creative community is hungry for work that feels authentic and rooted in the city's character. This project allows a small, agile team to produce a portfolio piece that showcases collaboration between performing and visual arts, with a strong sense of place.
