Project Brief

This project transforms a disused, iconic Manchester warehouse (e.g., a section of the old Granada Studios or a Victorian mill in Ancoats) into a living, breathing narrative. The concept is 'The Original Modern' — a 20-minute, looped performance piece that fuses immersive theatre, live music, and documentary-style projection to tell the story of Manchester's journey from 'Cottonopolis' to a city of digital and creative innovation. Unique to Manchester, the performance will incorporate field recordings from the city (trams, rain on cobbles, the hum of the science park) and a live soundscape built from samples of local factory machinery. A single director will work with a small ensemble of 3-5 multidisciplinary performers (actors, dancers, musicians) to create a powerful, intimate experience for a small audience (max 20 people per loop), ensuring COVID-safe capacity and a high-impact, portfolio-worthy piece. The final deliverable is a high-concept live event that can be filmed for a trailer, and a behind-the-scenes documentary short showcasing the creative process and the city itself. This leverages the trend for 'experience economy' and localism, creating a piece that could not exist anywhere else.
