Project Brief

This project reimagines the ancient Egungun festival through a contemporary lens, blending dance, theatre, and spoken word. Set against the iconic Agba Dam and the bustling Ilorin Central Market, the performance explores themes of memory, identity, and community. A small team of performers, a director, and a videographer will create a 10-minute immersive piece that pays homage to local heritage while pushing creative boundaries. The narrative follows a returning diaspora character who encounters the spirits of ancestors through dance and poetry. Using traditional Yoruba rhythms mixed with ambient electronic soundscapes, the piece invites audiences to reflect on cultural continuity. The performance will be filmed at sunset at Agba Dam, with the wardrobe inspired by Egungun's vibrancy but reimagined with sustainable fabrics. This project is unique because it bridges Ilorin's rich artistic past with modern storytelling, leveraging current trends in Afrofuturism and site-specific performance. The final deliverable is a professionally edited short film that can be submitted to festivals like the Lagos Fringe or African Film Festival.
