This project is a visual love letter to Ilorin, Nigeria, during the unique Harmattan season when a dusty haze transforms the city into a dreamlike landscape. We will explore how this seasonal phenomenon affects the colors, textures, and rhythms of life in the city—from the bustling Oja Oba market to the serene banks of River Asa. The aim is to create a cohesive series of photographs and mixed media pieces that blend documentary realism with painterly abstraction, reflecting the fleeting, atmospheric quality of the harmattan. The creative vision is to juxtapose the gritty, everyday scenes of Ilorin—like artisans at work, children playing, and the iconic Ilorin central mosque—with the soft, diffused light of the harmattan haze. We will use techniques like shooting through textured filters, long exposures, and digital layering to mimic the particulate nature of the air. This project is unique because it focuses on a specific, temporary weather condition as a lens to view the city's enduring character, creating a portfolio that is both locally authentic and universally evocative. By collaborating with local editors, we will ensure the narrative is tight and emotive. The final deliverables will be a series of 10-15 high-resolution prints and a short, silent visual essay (3-5 minutes) set to an ambient soundscape recorded in Ilorin during the harmattan. This project is perfectly timed for the harmattan season (December-February) and leverages the trend of atmospheric, location-specific storytelling.
