Project Brief

Limestone Ghosts is a site-specific dance film that transforms the historic Fort St. Elmo in Valletta, Malta, into a living stage where contemporary dance meets Malta's layered history. The project draws on the fort's role as a witness to centuries of conflict and resilience, using dancers' bodies to evoke the ghosts of soldiers, refugees, and ordinary people who passed through its walls. The choreography blends contemporary floorwork with gestures inspired by Maltese folk dance (il-Maltija), creating a movement language that is both timeless and urgently present. Filmed at golden hour and blue hour, the piece captures the stark beauty of the fort's limestone walls and the Mediterranean light, with the sea as a constant, haunting presence. The creative team will collaborate with a local historian to ensure cultural sensitivity and authenticity, weaving in fragments of recorded oral histories from Maltese elders. The film will be shot in a single day with a small, agile crew, using handheld and gimbal techniques to maintain intimacy and rawness. The final piece will be a 10-12 minute film, accompanied by an original score blending Maltese folk instruments (like the żaqq and flejguta) with ambient electronic textures. A behind-the-scenes documentary and a series of social media teasers will extend the project's reach, culminating in a premiere screening at a Valletta venue and online release. What makes this project unique is its deep engagement with place: Fort St. Elmo is not merely a backdrop but a character, its scars and textures responding to the dancers' movements. By combining dance, film, and heritage, Limestone Ghosts offers a fresh, emotionally resonant perspective on Maltese identity that is both local and universal.
