Subway Silhouettes is a micro-documentary series shot entirely on iPhones in vertical format, following five diverse New Yorkers on their daily commutes across different subway lines. Each episode is a one-minute portrait, blending observational footage with intimate voiceover, capturing the rhythm, diversity, and unexpected beauty of the NYC subway system. The project leverages the rising trend of vertical storytelling and authentic, lo-fi content, while celebrating the city's iconic transit culture. The series will be shot over two weeks during peak and off-peak hours, using natural light and ambient sound to create an immersive, cinematic feel. We'll focus on the visual contrasts of the subway—the graffiti, the reflections, the crowds, the solitude—and the personal stories that unfold in this shared space. The final deliverable will be a 5-episode series formatted for social media (Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts) and a 3-minute festival cut. What makes this unique is its hyper-local focus and the constraint of vertical format, which forces a new way of seeing. It's a love letter to the MTA, made with minimal gear and maximum heart.
