Project Brief

Imagine the echoes of centuries of performance trapped in the ancient timbers beneath the Globe Theatre. 'Beneath the Boards' is a 20-minute immersive performance for a small audience, blending spoken word, live music, and movement to unearth the forgotten stories of the actors, groundlings, and builders who shaped this iconic space. Using the unique architecture of the Globe during a private off-hours tour, performers guide the audience through the yard, the galleries, and into the understage area—a space rarely seen by the public. The performance responds to each location, with a soundtrack that layers Elizabethan melodies with contemporary ambient soundscapes, creating a haunting dialogue between past and present. What makes this project unique is its hyper-local specificity: it can only happen at the Globe. The team will collaborate with the Globe's education department to access archival materials and gain permission for a private, early-morning rehearsal and performance slot. The final piece will be filmed in a single, continuous Steadicam shot to capture the spatial journey, resulting in a powerful digital artifact that can be submitted to immersive theatre festivals and used as a showcase for all involved. The creative vision is to strip theatre back to its raw, architectural essence—where the space itself becomes the co-creator. The performance will be text-light, relying on physicality, vocal soundscapes, and the ambient noise of the historic building to tell its story.
