Echoes of Bewdley is a devised outdoor performance that transforms the town’s historic riverfront into a stage. Using the iconic Bewdley Bridge, the Quayside, and the flood markers on the riverside paths, the piece explores the community’s relationship with the River Severn — its beauty, its danger, and the resilience of the people who live alongside it. The production blends spoken word, physical theatre, and live sound to create a haunting yet hopeful portrait of a town shaped by water. With a small cast of 3-6 performers and a single director/writer, the project is designed to be agile and intimate. Performances will be promenade-style, with the audience moving between three key locations: the steps of St. Anne’s Church, the riverbank at Gardener’s Meadow, and the historic bridge itself. The script will be developed through workshops with local residents, collecting oral histories of floods past, and then distilled into a 20-minute looping performance that can be experienced from multiple vantage points. This project is unique because it uses the actual environment as both set and storyteller. The rising and falling of the river becomes a character, and the audience is invited to see Bewdley not just as a backdrop, but as a living archive. The final performance will be filmed for a digital cut that can be shared online, making it a portfolio piece for all involved.
