This project transforms the iconic crossroads of Times Square into a living stage, using the area's towering digital billboards as a backdrop for a surreal, immersive performance. The concept is inspired by the tradition of leaving a single 'ghost light' burning in empty theaters to ward off spirits. We will create a modern-day ghost light pilgrimage, guiding audiences through the neon-lit streets to discover hidden narratives of New York's theatrical history — from the vaudeville era to the present day. Five performers will weave through the crowd, their movements and spoken word echoing the stories of forgotten playwrights, chorus girls, and stagehands. The performance will incorporate elements of dance, physical theatre, and vocal improvisation, all set against the cacophony of the city. Using wireless microphones and subtle lighting cues (perhaps hand-held lanterns), we will create intimate pockets of performance amid the chaos, inviting passersby to pause and engage. This is not a traditional stage show; it is a cinematic, in-the-moment experience that leverages urban space and current trends in immersive storytelling. The project will be documented through a mix of on-the-ground photography and drone footage (with permits), capturing the juxtaposition of timeless performance art against the ever-changing digital landscape. The final deliverables will include a polished short film, a photo series, and a written manifesto, all of which can be used to showcase the creative team's ability to adapt, improvise, and produce compelling work in an uncontrolled environment. This project is a bold portfolio piece that demonstrates innovative use of public space and narrative depth.
