This project is a short dance film that reimagines the traditional Egungun masquerade through an Afrofuturist lens. Set against the backdrop of Ilorin's Erin-Ile Falls and the historic Emir's Palace, the film follows a young dancer who channels the spirit of Egungun, using movement to bridge ancestral traditions and contemporary urban life. The narrative explores themes of identity, heritage, and transformation, with the masquerade costume redesigned using recycled materials and LED lights to create a striking visual metaphor for cultural evolution. The film will be shot in a dynamic, non-linear style, combining sweeping drone shots of the falls with intimate close-ups of the dancer's movements. Choreography will fuse traditional Egungun steps with contemporary Afro-dance styles, set to an original score that mixes talking drum rhythms with electronic beats. What makes this unique is its hyper-local specificity: it showcases Ilorin's lesser-known natural beauty and cultural depth while pushing the boundaries of how traditional performance can be represented in digital media. The project aims to create a portfolio-worthy piece that can be submitted to international dance film festivals and shared widely online, positioning Ilorin as a hub for innovative cultural production.
