Manchester's industrial canals hold centuries of stories—from Victorian factory workers to modern-day urban explorers. This project will create a series of illustrated narrative artworks that bring these hidden histories to life through a contemporary visual lens. We'll blend theatrical performance documentation with illustrative storytelling, capturing actors portraying historical figures at specific canal locations, then transforming these moments into stylized illustrations that bridge past and present. What makes this unique is our hybrid approach: we'll stage subtle, site-specific theatrical moments along the Rochdale and Bridgewater Canals (near Castlefield and Ancoats), document them through photography, then reinterpret them as illustrated narratives. The final pieces will incorporate QR codes linking to audio stories, creating an immersive experience that celebrates Manchester's industrial heritage through modern creative trends like experiential illustration and augmented storytelling.
