Project Brief

This project reimagines the iconic Southbank Centre’s undercroft — a brutalist skate and graffiti hub — as a stage for a live, evolving soundscape. Over a single evening, a small team of performers, a sound designer, and a visual artist will weave field recordings of the Thames, spoken-word fragments from local poets, and real-time electronic music into an immersive audio-visual walk. The audience is guided along a path that uses the undercroft’s pillars, arches, and concrete textures as projection surfaces, creating a dialogue between the city’s industrial past and its creative present. What makes this unique is its co-creation with the space’s existing energy: skaters become unwitting performers, graffiti murals become reactive canvases, and the Thames’ constant flow becomes the score. The final piece will be both a live event and a captured film that documents the ephemeral performance, ensuring its portfolio-worthiness for all involved. Leveraging trends in site-specific immersive experiences and sound art, this project is achievable for a lean team and builds on London’s thriving alternative arts scene. It requires no complex rigging — just portable speakers, projectors, and a willingness to collaborate with the public.
